The SCI-MAT platform (Sustainable Circularity of Inorganic Materials) is a multidisciplinary research initiative at LUT University. At SCI-MAT, we investigate circular economy models for metals and industrial minerals, utilizing municipal and electronic waste, as well as by-products from mining and other industries as raw materials. We employ mechanical and hydrometallurgical processes to produce reusable materials.
Role within RELiEF
Within the RELiEF project, LUT leads Work Package 5: "Selective Recovery and Purification of Lithium" and plays a significant role in Work Package 8: "Sustainability Assessment and Business Modelling." In this capacity, LUT is engaged in selective lithium recovery from alternative waste streams, lithium purification, social life-cycle analyses to assess process impacts, socio-economic analyses to identify potential obstacles, and the development of a sustainable business model to facilitate process commercialization.
